About the Project

Rashid & Latifa School was built in just seven months, but every line and junction of its architecture was drawn with longevity in mind. Conceived as a temporary campus for the founding Emirati family while the permanent school was being developed, the building was never treated as a stopgap. Instead, it was designed as a fully functional school that could then be integrated into the larger campus as an extension. This future adaptability shaped everything from the modular construction logic to site layout and circulation, proving that urgency need not come at the cost of sustainability or spatial dignity. The architecture expresses cultural sensitivity without rigidity, allowing each learner to move seamlessly between individual focus, peer dialogue, and hands-on discovery. Circulation is intuitive and layered, making transitions effortless while reinforcing spatial hierarchy. The landscape is not an accessory but a learning environment in itself, extending the classroom into shaded gardens and open courtyards where curiosity and calm coexist. While this school was built quickly, it was built with a modular system, spatial clarity, and pedagogical intelligence create a replicable model for learning spaces that honor both time and tradition.

Design Approach

Its entrance serves as a bold architectural gesture, setting the tone for the building, while the façade, influenced by oriental design, creates a sophisticated interplay of light, shadow, and intricate detailing, rooted in local context and cultural heritage. The thoughtful arrangement of openings fosters a connection between interior and exterior, maintaining privacy while offering glimpses of the surroundings. Inside, the open-plan layout encourages seamless flow, allowing students to engage with the natural environment. The multi-purpose hall at the heart of the school functions as both a canteen and communal space, bringing the school community together.

Outcome & Impact

The Pavilion School adopts a modular architecture that reflects the natural growth of its student body and the changing needs of its community. This approach supports flexibility and sustainability, while echoing traditional Emirati values that honour both the individual and the collective. Open, adaptable learning spaces encourage collaboration and creativity, while quieter areas provide room for focus and reflection. Outdoor learning spaces and gardens are woven into each pavilion, strengthening the connection between students and nature. The design brings together heritage and forward thinking, creating a school that feels rooted in place yet open to the world. The Pavilion School was shortlisted for the World Architecture Festival 2025 and received the Educational Building of the Year award at the Architecture Leaders Awards 2025.
